Dear Coaches, 

We will be conducting the following worskhop: The Right Words at the Right Time: Using Language to Support Learning to Swim

Registrations Opens : 17 OCT 2026, 1pm

How we speak to swimmers influences what they notice, explore, and ultimately learn. In this practical workshop, AndrewSheaff will examine how coaches can use language to support skill development without prescribing a single “correct” way to move.
 
Using examples from elite freestyle swimming, the session will explore how language can support three key principles: alignment, propulsion, and timing. Participants will develop coaching cues, rewrite common instructions, and practice choosing between external cues, analogies, holistic cues, and questions.
 
The workshop will also emphasize an important principle: activities create the learning opportunity, while language helps swimmers use it. Participants will leave with a practical Language Selection Tool to help them choose more effective words for different coaching objectives.
 
Suitable for experienced learn-to-swim teachers, coaches, and educators.
