SwimSafer Instructor Renewal FAQ

SwimSafer Instructor Renewal FAQ

SwimSafer Issues

  • What are the considerations and follow-up requirements for coaches / SwimSafer Instructors who missed either or both the practical / theory components from the SSA recertification in 2020/21 and are therefore not eligible SwimSafer Instructor Renewal? Especially those who had medical conditions or valid reasons for not being able to complete the requirements.

If coaches or SwimSafer Instructors missed a practical or theory component of SSA recertification in 2020/21 due to valid reasons like medical conditions or maternity leave, they can notify and request verification from SwimSafer and SAQ. Refunds for the 2024 SwimSafer instructor renewal programme are available if their absence is deemed valid. Nevertheless, they must complete the entire SwimSafer 2.0 Instructor course again, including practical and theory assessments. There is an upcoming course in end Q1 2024 for affected coaches. SAQ and SportSG are considering options to assist coaches who missed the recertification with valid reasons to attend and complete the SwimSafer instructor course.

SportSync Issue

  • What steps are being taken to resolve issues with SportSync, including login problems and challenges with certification uploads and downloads for tracking CCE hours?

Development is ongoing to enhance the existing SportSync portals and potentially consolidate multiple portals such as SwimSafer or ActiveSG membership system for improved user experience. Coaches encountering challenges with certificate retrieval can seek assistance from CoachSG at sport_coaching@sport.gov.sg . Feedback and suggestions for further improvement are encouraged.

Continuing Coach Education (CCE)

  • Can you briefly explain the Continuing Coach Education (CCE) hours requirements?

CCE hours is a requirement of the NROC framework to encourage coaches to continuously upgrade their expertise and knowledge. Specifically for swimming, there is a recognition of the need for the swimming coaching community to understand and adapt to changes in the ecosystem. To encourage coaches to stay relevant, there is a need for them to sign up for programmes with SAQ (mandatory hours over three years) in order to qualify for NROC renewal. SAQ recognised the need for a transition period and would only impose this fully from 2025 onwards. NROC swimming coaches are urged to use this time to fulfill the new requirements for ongoing professional development, collaborate to improve coaching skills, and contribute to the collective growth of the swimming community.

Fees Issue

  • Why are there so many fee requirements to be a SwimSafer coach including NROC accreditation $60/3yrs, usage permit $125/yr, ActiveSG facility entrance fees, SAQ membership $80/yr and SwimSafer renewal programme $60/3yr, which imposes a financial burden on coaches. Would it be possible for some of these costs to be bundled together?

These fees are required for various reasons, which include administration of programmes, education for coaches and booking fees for usage of facilities to coach SwimSafer. Efforts are underway to integrate and simplify payments for these costs, potentially bundling them with a discounted rate to alleviate financial strain on coaches and streamline the renewal process. Furthermore, alternative subsidy methods are being explored to support coaches such as skills future or NTUC UTAP grant.
